Which toothpaste should I be using?

Best Toothpaste to Use | Dr. Kevin Burgdorf, DDSWe understand that our patients are bombarded with TV commercials and other ads from companies claiming to have the “best” toothpaste available. The truth is that most toothpaste is very similar. Any toothpaste with fluoride will help prevent cavities. In some instances, we will prescribe a toothpaste with a higher concentration of fluoride should a patient’s needs require it, and some patients may benefit from toothpaste that is specially formulated for sensitive teeth.

Regardless of which toothpaste you choose, it’s important to take the time to brush at least twice daily using an excellent technique. Check with your dental hygienist for an explanation and hands-on demonstration. Additionally, you should brush for two to three minutes. You can time this by humming a song or even setting a timer on your phone!

Don't Forget About Your Toothbrush

It’s also important to choose an appropriate toothbrush. Although different bristle angles are available, it ultimately comes down to technique. You want to make sure that you choose soft bristles over hard bristles, however. Hard bristles can damage your enamel and even your gum tissue.

It’s also possible to brush your teeth too hard. Doing this wears down the enamel, injures the gum tissue, and contributes to sensitivity. Gentle brushing for two to three minutes with fluoride toothpaste using a good technique not only gets your teeth clean but avoids damage.
