Many patients have wondered if their old silver fillings should be replaced with new composite resin fillings.
There are a few reasons to remove a silver filling:
- A cavity is present beneath the filling.
- The filling is leaking or broken.
- The filling is in a visible place and you are unhappy with the esthetics.
Silver fillings have been shown in countless scientific studies to be safe and shouldn’t be removed without reason. Dr. Burgdorf prefers to place composite resin fillings because they better replicate the original tooth color and he can be more conservative with his tooth preparation. This means more healthy tooth structure is preserved when doing a filling.
What We Do At Dr. Burgdorf's Office
We prefer to avoid invasive procedures whenever possible, which means that unless your silver fillings are causing you problems, there’s no reason to remove them. If you do happen to develop a new cavity, we will fill your cavity with tooth-colored composite filling. We will also check your fillings at each examination to make sure that they are in great shape. If we find a problem, we’ll let you know right away and discuss your options.
If you are bothered by your fillings, call our office for a consultation and we’ll give you our professional recommendation.
