Why do my gums bleed when I floss?

Flossing Causing Bleeding | Bridgeton MO Dentist Many patients dismiss a little blood in the sink while they are brushing as normal. The truth is that your gums should never bleed, and if yours are, you should schedule an appointment for a periodontal evaluation so that we can determine if gum disease is the culprit behind your bleeding gums.

Gums also bleed as a result of inflammation, which is caused by plaque at or near the gumline. If it’s been a while since you’ve flossed your teeth or you’re not keeping up with your brushing, your gums will bleed when provoked. But don’t worry, after a thorough cleaning by our hygienist and diligent flossing at home, your gums will “toughen up” and no longer bleed when you floss.

This does not mean, however, that you should “scrub” your gums in an attempt to toughen them. Brushing too hard or with a firm-bristled toothbrush can also provoke bleeding. One of our skilled dental hygienists will be happy to discuss your brushing technique with you to make sure you are getting the most benefit out of this valuable routine – and not unintentionally doing damage to your enamel and your gums!
