What are the advantages of tooth-colored fillings?
Tooth-colored fillings have a few distinct advantages over traditional silver (amalgam) fillings. The biggest advantage – and the reason that many patients and dentists prefer them to metal fillings – is the fact that once they are placed, they so closely match the color of your own natural tooth enamel that you are unable to tell the difference. This is particularly important when you need a filling in a tooth that is easily visible. Tooth-colored fillings allow us to fill your cavities without discoloring your teeth.
Another advantage of white composite fillings is that they require less tooth prep than metal fillings. Metal fillings are held in place mechanically, so the area around the cavity must be shaped in a way that keeps the filling securely in place. Composite fillings are made of a putty-like substance that is placed in layers and then, upon curing, actually binds with the material of your tooth. This means that we only have to remove the decayed portion of your tooth, preserving more of your natural tooth structure, which we think is always a good thing!
Material That Lasts
Because tooth-colored fillings are made of resin instead of metal, the material doesn’t expand and contract in response to temperature change, reducing or even eliminating the risk of your filling becoming loose or falling out.
