What causes tooth sensitivity?

Diagram of internal tooth structure at Bridgeton Dentist officeMany different conditions can cause sensitivity to cold, sweets, brushing, and so forth. Gum recession, which exposes the more sensitive root surface of the tooth, is often the culprit and is caused by periodontal disease. But cavities, cracked teeth, and tooth grinding/clenching can also cause sensitivity.

If you are suffering from sensitive teeth, it is best that Dr. Burgdorf examines your teeth to diagnose the cause and recommend the best way to reduce and/or eliminate the sensitivity so you can enjoy your ice cream again.

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Sometimes, all it takes to reduce the sensitivity you are experiencing is replacing your regular toothpaste with one designed for sensitive teeth. If this appears to be true in your case, Dr. Burgdorf will recommend a good quality brand.

If gum recession appears to be an issue, we will begin by treating your periodontal disease. In its earliest stages, gum disease can often be reversed simply by improving your home-care routine (although gum recession is usually only correctable with surgery). If your periodontal disease is in a more advanced stage, we will provide treatment to stabilize the disease and prevent further damage.

If your tooth is damaged in some way, we will provide the appropriate treatment. A filling may be in order or a crown to cover and protect the tooth.
