The minimum you should brush your teeth is twice daily – in the morning and before you go to bed. Ideally, you should brush your teeth after every snack and meal, but we understand that this is not always practical.
Brushing your teeth regularly is important for a few reasons
Why We Need to Brush Our Teeth
- It removes the traces of sugar that remain in your mouth after eating that bacteria like to feed on.
- It removes the film of plaque before it can harden into tartar.
- It removes surface staining before it can settle in.
- It keeps your breath fresh.
How You Brush Matters
Of course, how you brush is just as important as when you brush! Brushing with the proper technique will help you get the most benefit from this crucial self-care routine.
Use a soft-bristled brush (to avoid damaging the enamel) and a toothpaste with fluoride. Dr. Burgdorf or your dental hygienist will be happy to provide a recommendation for you.
If you have any questions about the actual technique of brushing, talk to your dental hygienist. You don’t have to be embarrassed. It’s a common question and many people didn’t learn to brush correctly. Our skilled hygienists will be happy to give you hands-on guidance in good brushing technique.
