Did you wake up with throbbing pain in your mouth? Did you bite down on a surprise olive pit? Did your child catch a fly ball… with their teeth?

Dental emergencies are unpredictable and often quite painful. They also need to be dealt with promptly.

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, Maryland Heights dentist Dr. Kevin Burgdorf is here for you. We’ll get you in quickly, often the same day, to eliminate your pain, identify the problem, and decide on an appropriate treatment plan.

What Happens at an Emergency Appointment?

Our top priorities when you are experiencing a dental emergency are relieving your pain and providing stabilizing treatment.

Any time you experience dental pain, give us a call. This is a sign that something is wrong. Most of the problems that cause dental pain won’t resolve on their own, and they can put your dental health – and even your overall health – at risk.

When you call, we’ll ask you some questions to gain a better understanding of what is going on so we can be prepared for your visit.

The first step will be to take some images of the area. Often, unexplained pain is the result of an infection inside the tooth. This will show up on an x-ray and give us a better idea of what we are dealing with.

Next, we’ll present you with your treatment options and the pros and cons of each option so you can make an informed decision. We’ll provide you with a stabilizing treatment, which could include (depending on your specific emergency):

  • Antibiotics
  • Tooth removal
  • Filling or restoration replacement
  • Tooth repair
  • Nerve treatment (root canal therapy)

Please note: If you are experiencing an emergency with severe bleeding or loss of consciousness or you suspect you have a broken bone, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

We can manage your dental emergency once more serious problems have been dealt with.

If further treatment is required or a follow-up is appropriate, we will schedule that treatment.

Remember that routine preventive care is one of the best ways to avoid dental emergencies!
