What is the Difference between a Filling and a Crown?

Sometimes patients want to know if they can have a filling instead of a dental crown. While they are both restorative treatments, fillings and crowns fulfill two different needs. Here are some of the differences between the two:

Porcelain Dental Crowns

Typically, we recommend a dental crown when your tooth has sustained damage from trauma or decay and the structure is compromised. A dental crown completely covers your tooth from your gum line to its chewing surface. Because it completely covers your tooth, it holds the structure together and offers additional stability.

A dental crown can prevent extreme damage that might require an extraction without treatment. We also recommend dental crowns for some root canal teeth that absorb much of the force from chewing.

Composite Fillings

Composites, also known as white or tooth-colored fillings, typically repair a tooth that has had a chip or a cavity. They literally “fill in” the damage to your tooth and seal it to keep out decay and bacteria. Fillings help you maintain much of your natural tooth structure. While they do a good job of sealing your tooth, they may not provide the stability necessary to prevent splitting or fractures.

Composite fillings also give us an additional treatment option. If you have minor repairs you wish to make to your smile such as filling in gaps, covering chips, or improving the shape of your tooth, we can use a composite filling material to bond your teeth, improving their appearance.

Dental bonding more affordable than many available cosmetic treatments. It is non-invasive and can last a long time with the proper care.
